Is there any scrapbookers out there that would like to join a group and share ideas?

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

I started a yahoo group not long ago and am looking for other people that might like to join. It is all about scrapbooking! You can be a beginner or an o’l pro at it. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/scrapbooking-made-easy/

Sure. I love scrapbooking. My sisters-in-law and I get together once a month at our local Archivers to do Scrap Mania. We also take their different classes. In fact I am going to 2 classes this week.

How many of you put your photos in scrapbooks? And how many of you are scrapbookers?

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

There’s a big difference… which do you do?

I do both and also what I call travel journals that are sort of a combination of a photo albumn and scrapbook. I’ve travelled extensively and just cannot bear to throw away anything I’ve picked up along the way. So, I keep concert, museum, castle, ticket stubs, beautiful bills from the hotels, wine labels and corks, postcards, even the little paper they put under coffee cups in Europe. I write in the journal while I am on the trip and then leave several pages blank to collage my findings once I get home. Since most scrapbooks are too large to keep in my carryon, I use the blank books found at stationery and bookstores.

But, then I ususally have a lot of photos which I sort into ones for the photoalbumn and one for the scrapbook. The scrapbook is more for public view on my coffeetable and the photoalbumn is more personal for me and my hubby to enjoy, but doesn’t have photos of wide enough interest to anyone else but us! (Like my hubby’s obsession with taking pictures of doors and balconies all over the world.)

How much money do (can) professional digital scrapbookers make?

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

How much do you make selling your digital scrapbook kits or other digital scrapbook services? I would like to scrap-for-hire, but I am also curious if the profits are worth the time to sell kits…papers, embellishments, etc. I’m sure it varies by quantity of products and where you are selling (either in a private store or with lots of other designers), but any vague price range someone out there can offer on your own success?

Creative Memories offers amazing potential for this! Storybook Creator Plus software is the best out there, and so much cheaper than anything else. It just won Creating Keepsakes Magazine’s Reader’s Choice Award.

Personally, I’ve been hired to make traditional scrapbooks, but I have Consultant friends (teammates) who have done a variety of digital scrapbooks (Storybooks) for customers.

You either want to charge per project, or per hour. Remember, though, that you may have to scan in lots of photos and memorabilia. You could offer this option as well.

The nice thing with digital Storybooks is that they are easily reproducible. So you can make them for a Little League team, and just swap out a few of the pics to focus on each player. Or make a heritage album that several family members will want to purchase.

You can get started with Creative Memories this way: http://www.mycmsite.com/sites/jenhurst/join-team/get-started.

You don’t have to join in order to use the Storybook Creator Plus software, but it’s a terrific company to be a part of! And you’ll find TONS of free support.

Hope that helps!

Are there any scrapbookers out there in Yahoo! answerland?

Saturday, August 14th, 2010

I love to scrapbook! I have a dedicated room in my house for just scrapbooking. Any one with tips or computer tricks for this craft are welcome to reply.

I am an avid scrapbooker. This may not help you, but it works well for me…I begin by organizing all of the photos I wish to put in my scrapbook. I organize them by event or date in a photo organizer of some sort (usually a small, photo-sized accordian file, or I create albums in iphoto on my mac). After they are organized I crop all of the photos. I find this is easier than waiting and doing it while creating the page layout, because the focus of each page should be on the photos and if they are already cropped it’s easy to lay them on the empty page and design around them. Once I have cropped all of the photos I decide on an order (what photos I want to begin my scrapbook with, and so on). I pull out all of the photos for my first section and decide on an appropriate page layout for the photos (this includes what paper I will use, shape designs, and colors that best match the photos). After I have completed the layouts of all pages in that section, I go back and journal and add titles. The last thing I do is add stickers (I find if I sticker before journaling I end up adding too many and take up too much space, making my pages look cluttered and taking focus away from my photos). You may not choose to scrapbook as I do, but I have found that this is a very efficient and fun way to scrapbook. I end up completing six pages in one sitting as opposed to one or two before I developed this method. Anyway, that’s my advice. I hope it was worth something. Have fun scrapbooking!!!!!

Is there any way to make those alcohol inks that scrapbookers and crafters use?

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

Is it possible to just mix liquid ink (like from caligraphy pen cartridges or ink used by artists) with rubbing alcohol for a similar effect? Has anyone tried making their own alcohol inks? I love the look of them, but I don’t want to pay $10 or more for three little bottles. Any suggestions?

Alcohol-based inks are intensely-colored, transparent, acid-free, alcohol-based colorants (dyes). I don’t know what else you could use, but here’s one thing that someone suggested at my site:

I’ve made my own alcohol-based inks with a square of pre-colored watercolor sheets (they come in a 2×5" booklet with a yellow cover…) …and some alcohol in a film canister…..works pretty well since the watercolor sheets are also translucent and saturated. Carolyn

I also found this exchange:

<Lilo> I saw on one of the sites that you can make your own Alcohol inks by mixing half Rit dye and half rubbing alcohol.
<Tarot_afk> if they dry out you just reconstitute
easiest ink is tempura paint powder … add alcohol
or glycerin til you get the consistancy you want
… i put mine into plastic containers or bottles
…if you use glycerine you can (hot) emboss

<Tarot_afk> you can also mix it them with those glycerine inks that come in tiny jars

You can also add particulate things into or onto the alcohol inks … like mica powders or real-metal powders, chalks, etc

Don’t forget that you can mix the alcohol ink colors just like you would mix paints to get many additional colors (though Pinatas will be clearest… Adirondacks are already "toned" down). And it often doesn’t take much ink at all to do a lot of things since the color is so intense.

(There are also alcohol-based markers –Prisma, etc.).

Where can I find other scrapbookers to scrapbook with?

Saturday, August 7th, 2010

I am new to my neighborhood, and I would like to find others who enjoy scrapbooking.

Welcome to a great community – not your neighborhood, though I don’t doubt you’ll be welcome there as well – but the creative spirit of fellow scrapbookers!

Check your phonebook (or the net) for the closest scrapbook store. Almost certainly they will offer classes, and if you take even one you’ll have a chance to meet other scrappers. Many women (as this is not exclusively but is primarily a female hobby) set up mini scrap meets and get together weekly at someone’s house to scrap together. Again, once you’ve been to a class, you’ll have made that first contact.

You can also just strike up conversations with shoppers there and mention that you’re new to the neighborhood… and see if you get an offer!

Try looking on grocery store and craft store bulletin boards. If you live near a Michaels, they offer classes, and you can hang out in their scrapbook section and meet people.

Many churches are running small ‘interest groups’ (joggers, scrapbookers, golfers, and many more can meet regularly and spend some fun time together) – a great way to find a home, integrate yourself into the community, and meet like-minded people. Especially if you are new to the neighborhood, I’d really recommend this.

Finally, don’t overlook other hobbyists/hobby stores/websites. Rubberstampers often also scrapbook. Alterered book and ATC artists may scrapbook on the side.

And of course new moms and grandmas are often seduced into scrapbooking for the first time by that adorable little new face, and the reams of pictures that have to be done something with….
Put a "scrapbooker’ bumpersticker on your stroller and go to the park – you’ll meet someone! Good luck in your new community.

Hugs,
Judith
